Where to Hang Out
Considered one of the most cosmopolitan of the Saronic Islands, pedestrianised Hydra (think feet, or donkeys) lives mainly off tourism. Discovered in the 50s and 60s by artistes – like Leonard Cohen, Axel Jensen, Hydra has good, sophisticated and upmarket nightlife, ditto shops (jewellery mainly) – and you can also refuel your creativity, as many artists make their homes here. Summer 2007, for example, saw an interesting exhibition by the painter Panagiotis Tetsis, in the Pavlos Kountouriotis Museum (2007).
Many celebrities from Greece and abroad own houses here. Perhaps more of a stopping off place than a destination, for ChI’s unless you have a base here.
