Must-Buys
Local specialities and unique finds
• Avghotarakho (known in Italy as bottarga), the Greek equivalent of caviare
- dried cods roe sealed in wax, to be eaten thinly sliced on melba toast or
lettuce leaves, with some nice dry white wine, champagne or indeed,
tsippuro.

• Tsippuro – the Greek version of grappa. It’s disconcertingly cheap (though
some high-quality brands are available) but really good, and the winter
warmer version (not bad on a chilly windy night on an island in summer,
either) is called rakomelo (“raki with honey”), cooked up with spices and
served hot – divine! And for ChI, better than the ubiquitious ouzo – though
if that’s your bag, it has its moments.

• The home-made chocolate (try the dark one with nuts) from Konaki in
Galaxidi.

• Paximadia (big rusk-like bread pieces) from Kythira island.

“Keep an extra bathing suit in your car. The sea is always closer than you think”.
Seen in Carouzos men and women’s clothing – lots of lovely linen stuff - on Joachim, in Kolonaki.
